Folktales, Fairy Tales, and Fables, Oh My!

Folktales, Fables, Fairytales, and Tall Tales come up at some point throughout the year with all grade levels from Kinder to 5th grade. Over the years, I've found some absolutely WONDERFUL anchor charts that helped me create a visual reminder for my students. Unfortunately, after using these anchor charts for a while, I noticed that my students were still having a difficult time understanding the difference between the six types of Traditional Literature. So I decided to create ONE anchor chart that combined all of the Traditional Literature story types.
On this chart, each type of story is divided into 4 main sections (characters, setting, problem, solution). Each week, you teach a new type of story, fill in the anchor chart, and then read a picture book. After the story is over, refer back to the chart to see if it fits the information on the chart.
I tested this anchor chart out with my 3rd graders, as they were studying these concepts at the same time that I was revising my anchor chart. Since I see each 3rd grade class once a week, this unit took 6 weeks to complete, but it was well worth the time! If you use this as a classroom teacher, you can finish it in 1-2 weeks.

Update made on 12/6/2013: This year, instead of trying to make this anchor chart for each of my classes on chart paper, I took the blank chart on page 8 to Office Depot and made a 24x36 color poster. After laminating it, I used stikki-clips to hang each of the 5 types of Folktales and their definitions. This way, I can quickly go over the parts of each type of story (instead of having to write them in each time.)

This update includes a blank color poster, a blank black/white poster, name cards for Fairy Tales, Fables, Myths, Legends, and Tall Tales, and the definitions for each story (characters, settings, problems, and solutions). It also includes some minor changes to the definitions.
