This 52-page unit includes 7 lessons taking place over 2-3 weeks to teach your students about Force and Motion, including Newton's Laws and gravity. This was designed to fit the BC Grade 6 Science curriculum. Each lesson includes teaching notes, links to any supplemental materials (notes slideshows, videos, etc.), and student materials (notes, activities, labs, project outline, test, etc.). This includes two labs, 1 set of scaffolded notes, 1 informational article, classroom activities, a choice project, a unit test, and possible report card comments you could use to communicate student learning.
This is designed to take 11-13 days, so if you teach science every day of the week, it will last about 2-3 weeks.
Lesson 1 - Introduction to Force and Motion
- activity - students will watch a video (YouTube required) and begin a mind map
Lesson 2 - What are Forces?
- activity - students will watch a video (YouTube required) and complete an identification activity
Lesson 3 - Balanced and Unbalanced Forces
- activity - students will take notes (includes scaffolded notes), complete an activity in which they will calculate the net forces acting on objects, and add to their mind map
- activity - students will read a nonfiction article and complete comprehension questions
Lesson 4 - Gravity
- full lab experiment is included - exploring gravity
- a video link is provided to help explain the results of the lab
Lesson 5 - Newton's Three Laws
- activity - students will watch videos (YouTube required), take notes, and add to their mind map
- station lab - students will work through 6 stations to explore Newton's Laws
- activity - students will choose between six projects to complete to show their understanding of Newton's Laws
Lesson 6 - Vocabulary
- activity - students will complete a word sort to match terms with their definitions. 16 terms are included. (with answer key)
Lesson 7 - Unit Test
- 3-page test is included (with answer key)
