French Revolution Simulation
What educators are saying
Description
This is a full lesson plan to utilize to teach The French Revolution. This is usually a fun topic for students to learn (they tend to love the Reign of Terror), but students often look past the actual causes of the Revolution. To solve that problem in my classroom, I use a simulation that goes in-depth on the financial crisis in France that will surely stick in the minds of students, and keep them engaged. This lesson covers basic terms of the French Revolution, the causes to the revolution, the National Assembly, and the reign of terror. Additionally, this lesson allows students to analyze and interpret political cartoons and comes with a primary source reading on King Louis’s execution. I typically follow this lesson with the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte.
I have received positive results and reactions from my students when carrying out this lesson. Depending on the length of your class period, this lesson will take 1-2 days. Lastly, students respond to two essential questions at the end of the lesson, which I use as a formative assessment (I use these same questions as short answer questions in the summative assessment).
