What's a French Sound Wall?

A sound wall is a tool to help students develop and strengthen their phonics skills.

It is similar to a word wall because you’re displaying and organizing words that you’re teaching students.

But there's a fundamental difference!

Now, in a word wall, teachers organize words by their first letter, so the words “un bateau” and “ un chapeau” would be under the cards with the letters B and C respectively.

In a sound wall, those two words could be under the card “eau” or under the card “/o/” because of the sound they include.

What's included in this French Sound Wall?

• Mouth articulation illustration cards for all 36 official sounds of the French language.
• There are also cards to illustrate complex sounds, such as R-blends, L-blends, and more.
• Phoneme category headers, such as "les voyelles orales", including options for you to choose when needed.
• This resource also includes more than 200 word cards (in colour and B&W), with highlighted graphemes and, whenever possible, images to support understanding.
• Sound posters in two different version: (1) one grapheme per poster, and (2) one sound per poster with different graphemes.
