There is never a wrong time to practice productive struggle in the classroom. I’ve designed these challenges to last the entire year.

The best thing about this bundle is that activities are so versatile. Many teachers have found success using these challenges with the first week of school activities, goal-setting activities, beginning of new terms, substitutes, brain breaks, stations, get-to-know-you activities, or even their own unit. I enjoy introducing these challenges in the first week of school or the first day of math class to refer to the experiences throughout the year.  Once introduced, I continue to introduce approximately one new activity a week until the end of the year. I like to give students about a week per activity.

As tempting as it is to give them the answers they desperately want, the wrestle is an essential part. With many of these challenges, the solution is SIMPLE. However, it requires the students to think outside the box. My favorite part of this product line is the reflection sheet. Students identify emotion in the learning pit that best illustrates their mindset before the activity ends. The reflection page is only included in the paid products, not the free samples or activities.

What is the teaching duration?

The duration of this unit is entirely dependent on how you time it. I intended for these challenges to last throughout the year; One challenge per week, etc. This gives students adequate time to struggle with the challenge when necessary. Time is a necessity for developing Grit. However, many teachers will use these for a quick unit or one a day as a “brain break.”

What grade levels are intended for the Growth Mindset Activities?

A growth mindset is essential to learn at any age because it helps students find how they react to difficult situations. It also allows teachers to facilitate a productive struggle in the classroom. However, I find that these activities are best used with 3rd grade and above. Some of the activities involve simple addition and maze challenges that have tested positive with 3rd-grade level and above.
