What educators are saying

This was a good, hands on, way to practice geologic time scale concepts. It took a little bit to prep, but now I'm set going forward. Thank you!

Description

Students love this! It's engaging, inquiry based, student centered, rigorous and easy prep! This covers NGSS Earth ESS1-4 Geologic Time Scale/History. Engagement will go through the roof!

What students do:

Students first sort the pictures and discuss their rationale as groups (most will be in the wrong order), then students present to the class why they put them in that order. During this time the dates and year should remain in their separate envelopes. Then they can sort the actual dates of the year in chronological order. The "years ago" can then be placed in numerical order.

Then as a class, we read “Earths History Close Reading” and students can then rearrange the cards accurately using the information in the text.

Once the cards are sorted accurately, students can fill in the graphic organizer. Students need to think to fill out the graphic organizer. They may struggle, but this is good because it requires them to refer to the close reading and the card sort often, this will force them to learn. You will have students say they can’t find the answer after the first try. Encourage them to read the text and refer the card sort multiple times.

This lesson is approximately 50 minutes.

This Activity Covers NGSS Standards:

Rock Strata is not included in this resource, however it is a scaffold for a lesson using rock strata as evidence for geologic time.

Performance Expectation: Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence from rock strata for how the geologic time scale is used to organize Earth's 4.6-billion-year-old history. (MS-ESS1-4) Assessment Boundary: Assessment does not include recalling the names of specific periods or epochs and events within them.

Disciplinary Core Idea History of the Earth ESS1-4: The geologic time scale interpreted from rock strata provides a way to organize Earth’s history. Analyses of rock strata and the fossil record provide only relative dates, not an absolute scale. (MS-ESS1-4)

Cross Cutting Concepts:

Time, space and energy phenomena can be observed at various scales to study that too large or small.

Scale, Proportion and Quantity

Patterns can be used to identify cause and effect relationships. (MS-LS4-2)

Graphs, charts, and images can be used to identify patterns in data. (MS-LS4-1),
(MS-LS4-3)

NGSSMS-ESS1-4
Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence from rock strata for how the geologic time scale is used to organize Earth’s 4.6-billion-year-old history. Emphasis is on how analyses of rock formations and the fossils they contain are used to establish relative ages of major events in Earth’s history. Examples of Earth’s major events could range from being very recent (such as the last Ice Age or the earliest fossils of homo sapiens) to very old (such as the formation of Earth or the earliest evidence of life). Examples can include the formation of mountain chains and ocean basins, the evolution or extinction of particular living organisms, or significant volcanic eruptions. Assessment does not include recalling the names of specific periods or epochs and events within them.
NGSSMS-LS4-1
Analyze and interpret data for patterns in the fossil record that document the existence, diversity, extinction, and change of life forms throughout the history of life on Earth under the assumption that natural laws operate today as in the past. Emphasis is on finding patterns of changes in the level of complexity of anatomical structures in organisms and the chronological order of fossil appearance in the rock layers. Assessment does not include the names of individual species or geological eras in the fossil record.
