What educators are saying

I used this as an extension activity (and extra credit) for our construction project. Many of my students chose to do the activity and they really enjoyed it.
This is a great activity to work on construction and circle skills that students enjoy and struggle with (in a good way)

Description

Detailed instructions on how to create this mural. It's gorgeous!!

You and your students will love this activity! Great way to introduce using a compass. **They only need to know how to make a circle with a compass.**

Some instructions might be difficult for some on their own. I went through a "rough draft" with my students and then they created a final draft on their own using the attached instructions.

Teacher Hints:

1. Do NOT fold paper to find the middle, just estimate. The compass doesn't turn nicely. Learned the hard way.

2. Not all will turn out to be a perfect regular hexagon so copy or trace the included regular hexagon template on bright paper. Cut out and glue student work on a bright color paper. This way each student has a nice finished product for the group tessellation even if there is way off.

3. My opinion was that the students who used marker turned out better. The color just pops!

4. Add in extra Geometry vocabulary such as reflections, rotations, translations, acute angles/triangles, obtuse angles/triangles, equilateral triangles, regular, center of a circle, radius, etc.

5. Stress the importance of following technical directions and precision.

6. I quick made a few drawings (or make one and copy it) for SpecEd students, those with broken wrists, trouble with fine motor skills, etc.

7. Students can add extra circles or segments for creativity. Some are amazing!! Challenge kids to do this.

This took one 52 minute class period to complete with my 7th and 8th grade Honor students. Please give honest feedback and rate appropriately. Thanks!!
