What educators are saying

Very engaging and challenging! I liked that it provided my students many real-life scenarios of the centers of a triangle.

Description

Tired of teaching the same boring lessons on Circumcenter and Incenter? After years of using the standard book resources, I decided to create this activity that demonstrates some real-life applications of these concurrent points. This product includes 9 tasks (with complete answer key and screen shots of graphics). Each task will ask students to find a real life circumcenter or incenter. (While this product did not include any centroid or orthocenter problems, I left those options on the top of the page just to see students would mistakenly try to create them.) Examples include:

-Designing the location for a logo on a team pennant (Incenter)
-Finding the "perfect place" for the filling of a triangular appetizer (Circumcenter)
- Finding the perfect meeting place for 3 friends at different subway stops on a NYC
-Finding the center of the Bermuda Triangle
-Locating a ceiling light fixture in the kitchen "work triangle"
-Finding a good meeting spot for three friends using a USA Map
-Designing a circular pattern on a triangular earring
-Finding the perfect toothpick placement on a club sandwich
-Finding the location of the front porch light on an A frame house

Some of the food examples are a little silly but my students seemed to enjoy it and by the end of the lab they were all pretty good and creating and analyzing circumcenters and incenters.

A few things before you download this product:

1) This activity is designed to be used with free GeoGebra software that can be accessed at www.GeoGebra.org (You can probably do the same thing with other programs such as Geometer's Sketchpad. You will need to make sure you can upload an image file that is compatible with the software if it is other than GeoGebra)

**I highly recommend GeoGebra...it is free and you do not even need to have an account to use it.

2) You will want to make yourself familiar with the commands before attempting this with your students. I would suggest having at least one computer lab day before using this product so that the kids can familiarize themselves with the commands of GeoGebra.(I included a basic command list on the answer key but you will definitely need to try it out before teaching it. It is very easy once you get the hang of it.)

3) You will need to use some saved image files to correspond with each scenario. GeoGebra allows you to upload them behind the grids. For my activity I used pictures from the following links:

**I do not own this pictures nor are they necessary for this product. Using something similar to this would be fine. All you need to do is a Google image search. For my classes, I saved all of the images into a easily accessible file on the computer and had them upload each of them as they progressed through the packet.

I appreciate any feedback you would be willing to leave. Be sure to check out my other products as well! I have lots of different Algebra and Geometry activities that are printable and include complete answer keys.

Thanks for looking! Happy Teaching!
