What educators are saying

This was the best resource I found for goods and services. It saved me so much time and my students loved it.
Thank you so much! My kids loved this! It was easy for them to understand and kept them engaged every step of the way!

Description

Looking for an engaging early elementary economics lesson? Your students will gain a deep understanding of buyers and sellers (producers and consumers) in a community with this fun simulation activity. Your second or third grade social studies students will love creating their own good or service. This resource is suprisingly low-prep for how interactive it is. Simply print, cut, and go! You'll get teacher instructions, classroom procedures, printable student sheets, a student reflection sheet, and a rubric.

There's an engaging review of basic goods and services concepts provided for you, along with everything you need to say. The teacher instructions are super thorough!

While it's designed to meet second grade and third grade standards, it could easily be used in fourth grade or fifth grade.

Included in this Tools of Geography Resource:

✅ Teacher instructions and ideas

✅ Preparing Goods and Services Activity
✅ Interdependence Town Simulation Activity

✅ Student Reflection
✅ Rubric

Learn More about the Activities!

Your upper-elementary social students will love these activities!

Preparing Goods and Services Activity: In this activity, students choose the type of store they'll have and prepare their good or service. You'll get sheets for grocery stores, clothing stores, food service stores, pet stores, farm, barber shops/salons, and a sports arena. There's also a blank shop for students who want to create their own kind of shop. Students fill out the sheets as they decide what kind of good or service they will provide, what the name of their store is, and how they will set up their store. They'll also prepare the cards they'll use in the next activity.

Interdependence Town Simulation Activity: In this activity, students will divide into two groups and take turns being buyers (consumers) and sellers (producers). They'll get paper money (provided in color and black and white). They'll "shop" at each others' stores buys goods and services with their money.

Reflection: Students will reflect on how they functioned in the simulation activity. They'll consider what they bought and sold. They'll consider things they might do differently. They will also reflect on the basic concept of interdependence in economics.

HIGH-ABILITY LEARNERS:

For gifted or high-ability learners, this activity is absolutely wonderful, as it allows for self-differentiation. Students can choose to make their own store type (as opposed to one of those provided), and they can get more sophisticated with their products.

⭐⭐WILLIAMS' MODEL OF CREATIVITY ⭐
This lesson is based on Williams' Model of Creativity, a model designed to develop the traits of creativity in students. This particular resource focuses on these traits:

☀️ Flexibility - the ability to take different approaches and generate alternate ideas
☀️ Complexity - the ability to handle lots of different ideas and cope with tricky, complex situations

☀️ Imagination - the ability to build mental pictures and visualize possibilities

In addition to addressing standards and providing an engaging and effective classroom experience, these activities will also build students' creativity skills.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. I've never heard of the Williams' Model before. Is that a problem? Nope! These lessons are designed to be plug-and-play. I've done all the Williams' work for you (choosing traits to develop and strategies to use). All you need to do is use the activities. The activities will do the rest!
  2. What do students need to know before the simulation activity? Students should be familiar with goods and services, the role of buyers, and the role of sellers. That's it!
  3. What if my students are struggling to work in groups? Even though this is a simulation activity that is very collaborative, each student has his or her own "store," so it's perfect for teachers who want students working collaboratively, even if the students struggle in groups.
  4. It says grades 2 - 3. What standards does it address? Because Social Studies standards vary widely, it would be impossible to list them for every state. This resource definitely meets state standards for the economics concepts of goods and services, producers and consumers, and interdependence.
