Grade 4, Unit 3: Substance Use, Addictions & Related Behaviours (Ontario Health)

The Grade 4, Unit 3: Substance Use, Addictions, and Related Behaviours activity packet is designed to meet both the overall and specific expectations outlined in the 2019 Ontario Health and Physical Education curriculum document.

Focus of the Unit:

The purpose of this resource is to introduce students to what tobacco and vaping products are and the impact that these products can have on individuals and users. Students explore the substances found in tobacco and vaping products, and describe the effects of these substances on the health of an individual. This resource also has students explore how they can make and support healthy, and informed choices about smoking and vaping, and explore factors that might influence individuals to use these substances, or consider using these substances.

Specific Expectation Addressed:

The specific expectations this resource addresses are as follows:

• D1.4: Identify substances found in tobacco and vaping products and smoke, and describe their effects on health.
• D2.3: Demonstrate the ability to make and support healthy, informed choices about smoking and vaping, using their understanding of factors that affect decisions about smoking and vaping and a variety of social-emotional learning skills.
• D3.2: Describe the short- and long-term effects of first- and second-hand smoke on smokers and on people around them, and the effects of vaping.

Lessons Included:

There are 8 lessons included in this packet. Each lesson includes a full-length lesson plan complete with three distinct parts (setting the stage, core learning activity, and lesson consolidation). The lessons included are:

There are 8 readings included in this packet along with 24 activities, 3 exit cards, 2 self-assessment grids, and 3 rubrics. Please do not feel you have to use all lessons in the order they are presented in, or all of the lessons in general. You can pick and choose the readings, activities, and lessons you wish to do with your students as you see fit.

The answers for the activities are open ended, and are dependent on student experience, and the way in which the activity is completed with students.
