Morphology and building vocabulary are important parts of our intermediate classrooms. RI.4 and RL.4 are all about determining the meaning of unknown words and phrases. Deep knowledge of a variety of Greek and Latin Roots helps provide students the skills to attack and break-apart these unknown words. But the study of Greek and Latin Roots cannot be contained to a single week or even month. Intentional daily instruction (even a few minutes a day) makes the difference.
Teaching 5th grade, I wanted a way to quickly and simply introduce my students to Greek and Latin roots. I created this Root of the Week resource to turn hallway transitions into meaningful moments for learning, as well as, quickly focus students as they enter the classroom.
82 different root cards are included in this resource. Using a hole punch, two binder rings, and two clear hooks, I placed the rolodex of roots in the hallway. As students entered the classroom, they noticed and read different parts of the card every day.
Each day, students lead/participate in a simple activity – record it, list it,
picture it, chant it, and teach it. Each activity requires 2-4 minutes (totaling 20 minutes throughout the week).
These simple and no-prep activities immediately throw us into learning. At the end of each week, I assign a student to flip to the next root. It’s a effortless way (and eventually student-led….with a few weeks of modeling/training) of engaging with root words.
