What educators are saying

This is such an important skill for students to master. These are great for morning work or even center activities.
My students are learning to use their Latin roots to read and find meaning. These worksheets are simple enough for the students to use with confidence. They feel so smart!

About the Greek and Latin Roots of the Day

This resource includes 33 pages of Greek and Latin roots practice.

You can use this resource during your instruction on roots or after for a spiral review.

Each page includes the following:

  • The root
  • The meaning of the root
  • An example sentence containing a word with the root for the students to find and highlight
  • Two sentences containing more examples of words with the root for the students to find and write (version 1) or define (version 2 and 3)
  • A paragraph length text that includes one word that contains the root for the students to define (with additional context for support)

There are three versions, so make sure you choose the version that works best for you and your students. The difference between the three versions is the practice required with the two sentences containing example words.

Version 1:

For this version, the students:

  • Highlight the word containing the root in a sentence.
  • Write the two words containing the root (used in two separate sentences).
  • Define a word containing the root used in a paragraph-length text.

Version 2:

For this version, the students:

  • Highlight the word containing the root in a sentence.
  • Choose the best meaning of two words containing the root (used in two separate sentences) from four choices.
  • Define a word containing the root used in a paragraph-length text.

Version 3:

For this version, the students:

  • Highlight the word containing the root in a sentence.
  • Define the two words containing the root (used in two separate sentences).
  • Define a word containing the root used in a paragraph-length text.

The words and reading levels of the sentences and paragraphs chosen are ideal for 4th and 5th grade students. Depending on the level of the students, your students may find some words easier and some harder. I do not recommend this resource for 2nd and 3rd grade level readers (or below) without teacher support.

About the Digital Greek and Latin Roots of the Day

The "Greek and Latin Roots of the Day" practice pages (all three versions) are also available in a digital format via Google Slides. The content is the same as the printable version.

The slides are visually appealing and optimized for digital use. The students will type their answers into provided text boxes. They will also drag and drop a semi-transparent yellow rectangle to highlight. Version 2 also includes moveable pieces for the students to drag and drop.

For answer keys, please refer to the printable PDF.

See page 3 of the PDF for the details and links to the digital version.
