What educators are saying

I love this resource and used it to support my persuasive speech introduction to my 6th grade students. I wish there were more people to choose from, though, because I do not like using the same person more than once.
This resource lends itself nicely for differentiation. All students did work at their level but everyone felt equal and had a good time working.

Description

During this project, students will first learn about growth mindset by reading an informational article about Carol Dweck’s work. Then, they’ll select a famous person in history with a growth mindset. They’ll choose from 14 famous leaders and pioneers in their fields for the basis of their research. Students will research their famous person as they respond to targeted research questions. While researching, they’ll be on the lookout for ways that the famous person had a growth mindset. Next, they’ll compile their research and prepare it for a 3D figure of their famous person. Students will write their research on an outline of the famous person’s face. Then, they’ll combine their research with the person’s face to create a 3-dimensional representation of their research subject. The end result is a stunning display of people with a growth mindset throughout history. Through reading, research, and creativity students will not only learn about growth mindset, they’ll also develop critical ELA skills!

This resource includes 2 versions of the critical materials. Version 1 includes materials designed for students in lower grades. Version 2 includes materials designed for students in upper grades. This means that you can easily customize the project to meet the exact needs of your entire class…or even better, you can pull specific materials to meet the needs of individual students (differentiation made easy!)!

This growth mindset project is super versatile! Once students finish their growth mindset research projects you could…

  • Host a Growth Mindset Sharing Day and Museum where students practice their speaking skills and teach the entire class about the famous person they researched.
  • Set up Jigsaw Learning Groups where students share and swap research subjects to deepen their understanding of all of the research subjects.
  • Plan an amazing Open House or Parent Information Night display. Since this project beautifully and creatively highlights students’ work, it’s perfect to put on display for parents. You might even take it a step further and combine this resource with Art with Jenny K’s Growth Mindset Collaboration Posters. The resources were designed to complement each other! You won’t believe students’ reactions as they put the poster together! The collaboration posters make an awesome anticipatory activity or closure activity for the research project!
