HASS: History Bundle | Changing technologies

This program has been developed with a specific focus on the Australian curriculum outcome related to understanding the impact of changing technology on people's lives and how technology has evolved over time.

With HASS Year 2 History Changing Technologies, students will be able to explore and discover the fascinating ways in which technology has transformed our world. They will learn about how technology has changed the way we communicate, work, and live our daily lives.

Our program includes a range of engaging activities, resources and links to help students develop their knowledge and skills in this important area. They will have the opportunity to examine historical artifacts, analyze primary sources, and participate in group discussions to deepen their understanding of the topic.

Lesson Plan Includes:

Lesson One: This lesson is about starting a history unit by assessing students' prior knowledge and creating a mind map of everything they know about life over 100 years ago. Students will also generate questions and create a class display using their wonder bubbles.

Lesson Two : This lesson is about exploring the concept of technology and how it has changed the way we live.

Lesson Three: This lesson is about exploring electrical appliances and their importance in our daily lives. Students will compare their own use of electrical appliances to what life was like before the invention of electricity and discuss the disadvantages of olden day appliances.

Lesson Four: This lesson is about taking a virtual tour of an olden days house and discussing the differences with students' own homes, leading into a discussion about how things change over time and the importance of interviewing family elders to learn about how life was like in the past.

Lesson Five: This lesson is about using a photograph of an old telephone as a historical source to teach students about analyzing sources and how technology has changed over time. Students will also discuss communication methods from the past and present and reflect on how their lives might be different without the invention of the telephone.

Lesson Six: This lesson is about comparing modes of transportation used over 100 years ago to those used today, discussing their advantages and disadvantages, and understanding how changes in transportation have impacted our daily lives.

Lesson Seven: This lesson is about exploring past and present music players, using a KWL chart and a historical timeline to understand the development of music technology over time.

Lesson Eight: This lesson is about exploring what school was like in the past through watching a video, and having students write a short narrative or diary entry from the perspective of a person living in the 19th century, incorporating factual details about leisure or going to school.

Lesson Nine: This lesson is about exploring the history of toys and comparing them to modern-day toys, discussing what has changed and what has remained the same.

Lesson Ten: This lesson is about reflecting on the changing technologies learned throughout the unit and having students write about their favourite piece of technology on the Retro TV PDF and creating a display.
