Why I teach calculator skills…

I know a lot of teachers still prefer to teach the “by-hand” method for the majority of the Algebra I topics. But, with recent changes to the STAAR test and the gaps we are facing now in our students’ basic math skills, calculator hacks may be the only way some of our students will be able to pass the STAAR tests. The STAAR and EOC tests are written at a difficulty level where a calculator is needed in order to succeed for a lot of our students. If the students are going to be given a tool, I as a teacher need to make sure that they are able to use that tool correctly.

A lot of the hacks contained in this packet are only revealed to my students during STAAR Review. A lot of the hacks were shown to me by students and can be used on a variety of different problems. There are also multiple hacks that can be used on the same problem. The key for students passing the STAAR is ensuring they have a variety of skills in order to be successful.
