What educators are saying

Love, Love, LOVE this resource. I used this in my creative writing class. It took longer to complete than I thought it would, but the kids really got into it. They created great poems and art representations. The directions and examples are clear and helpful!
Used as a book report template to show setting and quotes. Kids loved it and the directions were clear and easy to follow. The pictures helped a lot. Great resource!

Description

Tunnel books are unique and fun! A tunnel book is a three-dimensional movable book that you read by looking through it. Originally from the mid-18th century, tunnel books are enjoying new popularity as an art form in their own right.

The tunnel books you've seen may look complicated, but I've developed a method that simplifies the process so that students from 3rd or 4th grade and up can be successful making tunnel books of their own. We'll use a postcard as a prompt for writing an original haiku poem, and then create a tunnel book to illustrate it.

This 12-page pdf will explain how to write a haiku and offers several examples to share with your students. Then it takes you step-by-step through the process of creating a tunnel book to illustrate your haiku, using common materials and a minimum of prep. A student gallery of haiku tunnel books will inspire you to do this lesson with your own students! Then I'll leave you with more ideas for other ways you can use tunnel books in your classroom.
