What educators are saying

My students loved this! The slides are visually appropriate- fun to look at but not hard to read or overly busy. The passages were engaging and the students loved reading them.
I had my students use this with a sub when I was out one day. I came back to a class of students amazed at the things they learned about Halloween that they didn't know. Fully engaged and had no trouble with any of my behaviors for my sub.

Embrace the Halloween excitement with this engaging Halloween Reading Comprehension Activity! You can use this resource to get your students moving, working together, and working on their reading comprehension skills with this Halloween Reading “Around the Room” activity for 4th and 5th graders!

Each year, it seems that my students need reading comprehension practice above and beyond the grade level skills that we study. They also need significant practice in nonfiction reading comprehension. I created this “Halloween Reading Comprehension Activity” to meet this need.

About the Halloween Reading Topics and Texts

Included in this resource are 12 nonfiction passages (paragraph length) on various Halloween topics or topics often associated with Halloween. With each passage are 4 comprehension questions that can be answered using the text.

The texts in this resource are short, but rigorous. They are written at the top of the lexile range for 4th and 5th graders. The questions can be answered using the information in the text. ***The reading comprehension questions in this set are not meant to trick or challenge students.

Printable Halloween Reading Comprehension Practice: TWO Options for Use

Option 1: Around the Room Activity (recommended) – Get your students moving and reading by taping the texts and questions around the room. Pair or group your students in groups of three and have them go around the room. They will read the text with their group and then answer the questions. If you wish to pair your students and have more than 24 students, I recommend making two copies.

Option 2: Regular Printable Version – I have also included a regular printable version of the passages and questions (one passage and set of questions per page) as another option.

Digital Halloween Reading Comprehension Practice: TWO Options for Use

The digital Halloween reading comprehension is designed for use with Google Slides.

There are two digital versions included:

Version 1 - Choice Board of Topics – From a digital menu, the students choose which topics they want to read and practice comprehension with. You can assign all of the topics or sets of 4 topics.

Version 2 - Single Text Version – Using this version, you can assign the texts and questions that you want each student to complete. To assign only a few of the slides, make a copy of your master. Rename the copy with the Topic Names or the Slide #s. Delete the slides you don’t want to assign.

Please see the video preview to see how the digital Halloween reading practice works.
