Handwriting Letter Formation Strips
What educators are saying
Description
Teaching handwriting is part of teaching writing conventions, but finding more time to teach whole group handwriting is not practical or effective. The whole point of taking time to teach students handwriting, specifically proper letter formation, relative letter size and shape, and proper stroking, is transfer...that students actually make and form letters correctly and legibly in their own writing...readable to themselves and others.
Teaching proper letter formation is an essential foundational skill that improves the quality and volume of student writing. AND, teaching handwriting improves reading skills! "Handwriting serves to link visual processing with motor experience, facilitating subsequent letter recognition skills." James, Karin. "The Importance of Handwriting Experience on the Development of the Literate Brain" Current Directions in Psychological Science (2017).
In addition, research shows that handwriting instruction improves word learning due to the significant overlap in the brain's Reading System, Letter Perception System and Writing System. In a nutshell, researchers Karin James & Virginia Berninger (2019) asked "What if learning to perceive letters and read words is also facilitated by producing them? Indeed, research shows that children learn symbols better if they write them by hand during learning than through other forms of practicing including visual, auditory or typing." (article here)
