I like to do the first day in stations so students aren't dozing off listening to me talk the whole period, yet they aren't having the fear and anxiety of having to do whole group ice breaker activities. Instead, they work in groups to go through 9 stations to get to know the class rules, their classmates, tell the teacher about themselves, and learn a little about their teacher. I use the expectations at a station and have a group set (usually 6) of the expectations in their complete, filled in form. The students then take a copy of that is not completely filled in and fill it in. This requires them to copy it so they are at least looking and reading the expectations a little. If I give them a filled in copy I know half will just throw it in their bag or away and call it a day.
