Holidays Around the World Booklet: December Holiday Comprehension & Writing

Your students will love learning about other cultures with this Winter Holidays Around the World craft. With differentiated reading passages and a poetry book perfect for showcasing student learning, students will learn about Christmas, Hanukkah, Chinese New Year, Kwanzaa, Diwali, and Three Kings Day in this fun social studies-based writing project.

Here's how it works:

• Students use web resources & included passages to learn about a holiday. They complete the included note-taking page to document their learning.
• After finishing the learning portion, students use scaffolded organizers & their notes to draft a poem about the holiday. Each holiday focuses on a different type of poem & models are provided to help them.
• Students revise and finalize their poems to create either a holiday poetry book or poetry pocket.

Your students will write 6 poems including:

✔ Christmas - cinquain

✔ Kwanzaa - diamante

✔ Hanukkah - acrostic

✔ Diwali - tanka

✔ Lunar New Year/ Chinese New Year - haiku

✔ Three Kings Day - shape poem
