AIM: How did Joseph Stalin’s Five Year Plans affect the Soviet Union?

  • ACTIVITY 1 -- PRIMARY SOURCE ANALYSIS: Students will analyze a speech by Stalin where he outlines his domestic policies for the Soviet Union. Here, students should be able to predict the type of leader he was, and scaffold on their knowledge of the Industrial Revolution to determine whether or not his goals were feasible without conflict.
  • ACTIVITY 2 — DOCUMENT ANALYSIS: Students will analyze a document to determine the negative effects of collectivization and the Five Year Plans on Soviet citizens, particularly those affected by a devastating famine in Ukraine.
  • ACTIVITY 3 — TEXT ANALYSIS: Students will analyze a text about the rise of Joseph Stalin and the effects of his totalitarian rule over the USSR.
  • ACTIVITY 4 -- ASSESSMENT: Students will choose one of two options for assessment to submit on looseleaf.

  • ADDITIONAL RESOURCES:
    • ACTIVITY 5 -- ADDITIONAL RESOURCE: GUIDED NOTES: Students will copy notes from the PowerPoint or otherwise as directed.
    • ACTIVITY 6 -- ADDITIONAL RESOURCE: VIDEO ANALYSIS: Students will watch a quick video linked from YouTube for visual differentiation and answer questions.
    • PowerPoint included with key terms. Counts as differentiation for visual learners with broken down definitions for students (or emerging ENL students) that need the extra reinforcement.
