AIM: How did the Great Depression lead to the rise of totalitarianism in Europe?
- ACTIVITY 1 -- ENGAGING DO NOW: Students will analyze a chart with the prices of goods from 1933. They will have $1 from one day of work. They have to “grocery shop” for goods for their family for the week on their $1 salary.
- ACTIVITY 2 -- TEXT ANALYSIS: Students will read a text and answer questions. Can be completed in pairs. The text will teach them about how the Great Depression lead to the rise of dictators and totalitarianism across Europe.
- ACTIVITY 3 -- ANALYZING THE RISE OF TOTALITARIANISM IN GERMANY: Students will analyze three texts to assess Hitler’s early life, the Beer Hall Putsch, and Mein Kampf. Key terms identified in these texts are: Anti-Semitism, Manifesto, Racial Purity, Mein Kampf.
- ACTIVITY 4 -- ASSESSMENT: Students will choose one of two options for assessment to submit on looseleaf.
- ADDITIONAL RESOURCES:
- Page for guided notes (to accompany the PowerPoint included.)
- Additional political cartoon for higher-level students that need an additional challenge.
- PowerPoint included with key terms. Counts as differentiation for visual learners with broken down definitions for students (or emerging ENL students) that need the extra reinforcement.
