What educators are saying

I used this resource to teach poetry to my high school students and it worked so well. The kids were engaged and it helped me deliver the material in a streamlined manner.
My students really struggle with poetry, and this is such a great step by step approach on how to analyze them. Love the list of terms so they can keep them in their binder and use them when needed.

Description

Use this attention-grabbing 32-slide lecture (downloads in both Prezi & Google Slides format) and accompanying handouts to pull even your most reluctant students into a study of poetry. Begin by piquing your students’ interest in poetry by comparing the art form to song lyrics. Then, present a concrete, 9-step process to help any student decode any poem.

These lesson materials include a guided note handout (with answer key) that will help focus students’ listening and serve as a reference sheet as they move forward into analyzing poetry. After the lecture, use the “Know the Lingo” worksheet (with answer key) to build on prior knowledge and introduce new elements. The poetry terms worksheet can be used as a solo assignment or a small team matching game. Poetry terms on the worksheet include alliteration, allusion, assonance, ballad, consonance, diction, enjambment, free verse, metaphor, meter, onomatopoeia, rhythm, simile, stanza, symbol, theme, tone, and verse. All student handouts are included in both printable PDF & Google Drive versions.
