What educators are saying

My students were very intimidated by writing a thesis and this resource was very helpful in simplifying the process for them
My students and I both found this resource useful and easy to ease. Made the whole learning process enjoyable.

Description

This bundle explains what a thesis statement is and includes step-by-step directions for writing one yourself. It then does the same thing for topic sentences and explains their importance and the differences between them.

The bundle includes:

1. How to Write a Thesis Statement PowerPoint (17 slides) --> includes an activity where I put students into groups of 3-4 students, give them an essay prompt, and have them come up with a thesis statement together. There are 3 different practice essay prompts on fun, controversial topics that my students have fun debating and coming up with a thesis for (including topics such as dress code and social media).

2. Writing Thesis Statements worksheet (3 pages) --> gives an overview of what should and should not be included in thesis statements. It then provides 6 example essay prompts and asks students to come up with their own thesis statement for each one.

3. How to Write a Topic Sentence PowerPoint (9 slides)

4. Teacher Instructions (1 page) --> gives a thorough overview of how to best use this bundle

The presentations also include links to 2 really great video clips (about 4 minutes each and found on the public domain) that thoroughly explain thesis statements and topic sentences. My students always love both clips and think they are hilarious (and educational!).

I use this in my high school English classes and it has really helped my students master the art of writing theses and topic sentences. I've gotten great feedback from them and really see an improvement after going through this with them! This is one of my very favorite presentations that I do throughout the year and it's always exciting to see these things just "click" in students' minds.

Enjoy! Feedback is greatly appreciated! :)
