What educators are saying

My students were really excited about this lab! They loved it. It did not take much prep besides picking the songs to use.
Students loves this resource! They were shocked at how the type of music they were listening to affected their heart rate.

Description

FUN! Students study themselves in this anatomy investigation and even determine their own variable. This is a twist on the usual heart rate activity! NO PREP NEEDED!

Find this activity in our Circulatory System Unit!

In this activity, students will:

  • Read a brief background about heart rate
  • Get a quick tutorial about taking their own pulse
  • Test their heart rate after brief exercise
  • Test their heart rate while listening to music (yours or their own)
  • Test their heart rate after a variable of their own choosing
  • Complete a data table and claims-evidence reasoning for each section
  • Answer follow-up analysis questions

Need an EASY and NO PREP way to teach the respiratory system?

Try our NO PREP Circulatory System Stations Activity!

If you want to make less copies, you can easily leave off the last 2 pages of the 4. Pages 1 and 2 are a complete investigation of heart rate on their own. Pages 3 and 4 take it further by having students investigate their own variable and complete the full analysis section.

NGSSMS-LS1-3
Use argument supported by evidence for how the body is a system of interacting subsystems composed of groups of cells. Emphasis is on the conceptual understanding that cells form tissues and tissues form organs specialized for particular body functions. Examples could include the interaction of subsystems within a system and the normal functioning of those systems. Assessment does not include the mechanism of one body system independent of others. Assessment is limited to the circulatory, excretory, digestive, respiratory, muscular, and nervous systems.
