I Can Be Friendly to Others

"I Can Be Friendly to Others" is a social narrative, an evidence-based practice found effective for teaching social and behavior skills to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as well as others with who demonstrate social and behavioral deficits. It is based on the Social Stories™ strategy, developed by Carol Grey. It is written at a second grade reading level but can be adapted for use with children either younger or older, in general and special education classrooms.

"I Can Be Friendly to Others" is a story targeted to younger children who have difficulty initiating and maintaining positive peer interactions due to verbal or physical aggression. It breaks down and explains the skill of “being friendly” into four discrete skills which include:
• Using a calm voice
• Using nice words
• Keeping a friendly face
• Keeping your hands and feet to yourself

In addition to the story itself, "I Can Be Friendly to Others"
includes a teacher’s guide, an anchor chart and multiple worksheets to review and reinforce the concept.
