Description

Not sure how to address ChatGPT in the secondary classroom? Worried about the use of artificial intelligence and plagiarism in schools? Looking to engage middle and high school students in relevant, age-appropriate discussions about current events in technology while increasing digital literacy? This lesson is for you!

ChatGPT, a natural language processing app by OpenAI, is gaining popularity among students and adults alike. Many teachers have well-founded concerns about potential issues due to this AI technology...but ChatGPT doesn't have to be a source of anxiety and fear! This lesson will help you jumpstart conversations around the software in your classroom while having a bit of fun with your students!

The Details!

In this lesson, students will be tasked with reading 3 essays and determining which one belongs to which author: a student, a teacher, and ChatGPT. But there's a (secret) catch...all three essays were written actually written by ChatGPT!

After watching a video to gain background knowledge, completing the "Identifying Authorship" task, and discovering the "secret" about the essays, students will engage in a lively class discussion and complete a reflective exit ticket. Through it all, you will be addressing the benefits and drawbacks of ChatGPT and teaching students to use tech tools responsibly and ethically.

This unique, creative, and engaging lesson plan includes...

  • A Google Slides presentation with teacher instructions
  • Three ChatGPT-generated essays
  • An evidence-tracking document for students
  • Discussion bank of 20 possible questions to spark conversation
  • A reflection-based exit ticket
  • ...and the priceless opportunity to get ahead of ChatGPT & AI use in your classroom!
