    Description

This musical movie guide duo features the work of Lin-Manuel Miranda. It combines my movie guides for each of these films and each guide contains 50 questions. You can click on the individual resources above to view more info.

    In the Heights

In the Heights follows the story of Usnavi, a NYC bodega owner, who dreams of returning to the Dominican Republic. However, he is torn with sharing his feelings for Vanessa and leaving behind a community he loves. The story follows the summer days of Washington Heights’ residents as they come together during different obstacles. This vibrant and brilliant musical debuted on Broadway in 2008 and is now available in movie form. It features music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda. This film adaptation, by Miranda and Jon M. Chu, stars Anthony Ramos, Melissa Barrera, Leslie Grace, Jimmy Smits, Corey Hawkins, Olga Merediz, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Gregory Diaz IV, Stephanie Beatriz, Olivia Perez, Chris Jackson, and more! This film would be a wonderful addition to one's Hispanic Heritage Month Unit, a unit on musicals, or a Latinx Studies course.

My movie guide contains 50 questions and an answer key has been provided for your convenience. The movie's runtime is 2 hours and 23 minutes but I would allow for at least two hours and 45 minutes to three hours since there is a reflection question to answer before and after after the movie. RATING- The movie is rated PG-13 for some language and suggestive references. I would encourage you to watch the film prior to purchase to make sure it fits your classroom needs.

VIEWING OPTIONS AS OF JUNE 10TH, 2021- The movie was released in theaters on June 10th, 2021 and will be available on HBO Max for subscribers to stream from June 10th through July 11th, 2021. The DVD release date is currently estimated for September 17, 2021.

FUN NOTES- I have also included fun facts/info on the answer key so you can share, if you choose, with your students while viewing.

    Hamilton

The musical, Hamilton, follows the story of Founding Father and Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton. The musical was filmed in 2016 and features the original Broadway cast. The story follows the hardships of his childhood, his marriage to Eliza, and the loss of his son. It also examines his connections with Aaron Burr, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and more. It discusses his large contribution to The Federalist Papers which helped promote the ratification of The Constitution. This musical would be beneficial in a U.S. History, Music, or Theater course.

My movie guide contains 50 questions and an answer key has been provided for your convenience. The film's runtime is 160 minutes and it is rated PG-13 for for language and some suggestive material. I would recommend setting aside at least three hours since there is a question to answer before the film and two questions to answer after viewing. The film version of the musical was released on Disney Plus on July 3rd, 2020.
