What educators are saying

This is helpful for gaining baseline information on social skills. Some of the scenarios are too easy for my junior high students, but it leaves opportunity for students to think of other appropriate and inappropriate responses.
This resource was very easy to use and it provided me with a lot of information in the area of social communication that I would not have been able to collect otherwise.

    Description

A bundle of two informal social communication tools. These assessments will provide helpful information for intervention planning, IEP preparation, progress monitoring and assessments.

First, you will receive a video-based informal social assessment tool to examine the pragmatic skills of middle and high school students. Examines the social skills and social communication skills needed to function socially and build relationships.

This is an informal (non-standardized) assessment. It should be used as a portion of a social communication assessment within a broader array of formal tests when evaluating the receptive and expressive components of social communication skills for students with autism spectrum disorder mild-to-moderate) or social communication disorder.

This tool provides valuable information for developing baselines, preparing for IEPs, crafting progress notes and updates, and creating goals for the following areas:

    1. Basic functions of communication, including greetings, farewells, requests, asking for directions, answering the phone...and more!

    2. Conversation skills, including initiating, maintaining, ending, topic appropriateness, oversharing, story retelling...and more!

    3. Functions for making emotional connections, (related to making friends, maintaining relationships) including making a promise, supporting a friend, encouraging a friend, expressing empathy, refusing...and more!

    4. Understanding and expressing emotions, including sad, mad, angry, proud, worried/concerned, bored, and afraid.

    5. Understanding and using paralinguistic and context clues, including sarcasm, recognizing deceit, understanding idioms, intonation, perspective-taking...and more!

The “Response forms” include both check boxes and text boxes. If using Adobe Reader (a free download), you can type directly into the sheets as you administer the informal assessment, or you can print the response forms. Also included is a report template specific to this assessment tool and summary sheets (great for IEP meetings or discussions with parents). Some information in the report auto populates to reduce your report writing time!

    The video contains:

•50 video scenarios, with voice overs. The voice over uses an off screen voice that is not part of the narrative, (as opposed to an exchange of dialogue between characters), hiring actors, writing scripts etc. would place this product at a much higher price point),

    •26:56 long with no ads,

•Has students identify social mistakes and then demonstrate use of the same skill,

    •Includes brief (optional) stretch break,

•Explores social language, paralinguistics and understanding of context clues in setting, and

•Examines both understanding and use of each social communication skill.

This tool was designed to give the examiner a better sense of where the student is struggling in each skill area. Is it not fully understanding the skill? Is it not being able to use the skill? Is it difficulties with understanding and/or using paralinguistics? It will give you a better sense of how to approach intervention.

It is based on ASHA's social benchmarks.

✌️ Second, you will also receive these editable, neuro-affirming, four point student self evaluation and parent/teacher rating scales are print or no print, teletherapy compatible and for middle and high school students to give you informal assessment data in the following areas of social communication and executive functions:

    1. Conversation Skills,
    2. Self Regulation,
    3. Peer Interaction Skills,
    4. Understanding Perspectives and Social Cues,
    5. Organization and Study Skills,
    6. Attention and Time Management,
    7. Nonverbal communication,
    8. Problem Solving,
    9. Self Advocacy, and
    10. Blank Templates.

In each of the above areas, there is a self-assessment scale for students to complete and a rating scale for teachers, parents or therapists to complete. That way, you obtain the perspective of the student and others around the student. You will also receive instruction letters to send to parents, teachers and therapists along with the rating scales. Just added: report templates to use for each student and parent/teacher scale!

This flexible product is designed for use in schools and clinics as well as in a teletherapy platform. Included are tips for making self assessment meaningful, ideas for reducing bias, and instructions for using hard copies and online completion (several administration modes are offered depending upon the type of technology available to the parent or teacher rating the child).

Best of all, all of the scales, blank templates and report templates are editable in powerpoint. You can modify the wording or language to be more specific to your students. You can delete and add rating statements! A great way to individualize to the needs of each student! Each rating scale is set up to allow ratings at three different dates so you can gather data at different assessment points during the school year.

You will need powerpoint if you wish to edit the rating scales.

    Other assessment tools:

Student and teacher rating scales (editable)-social skills

    Deep r screening

Selective mutism informal evaluation (of communication).
