This file contains 7 pages of activities and a Common Core read-aloud lesson plan for The Great Kapok Tree .

The lesson includes objectives, vocabulary, pre-reading discussion, discussion questions for given points in the story, and comprehension and a thorough post-reading comprehension discussion with text-to-text comparison.

Post-Reading Comprehension Activities

1. Rainforest Animals Web: Learners Draw and Write the names of the rainforest animals in the story.

2. Retell: Use the graphic organizer to draw the 3 main parts of the story. Do this as a group or assign to partners. Use the completed graphic organizer to retell the story.

3. Story Elements: This can be used to guide post-reading discussions or can be used as a comprehension activity by asking learners draw/ write. draw and write to complete the graphic organizer. Use the complete GO for retell or for writing about reading.

4. Characters’ Feelings Change Learners draw and write to tell why the man’s feelings about cutting the tree changed.

5. What’s Your Opinion? Answer the YES NO question. “Should the kapok tree be cut down?” and draw and write to explain your reason.

6. Animals Depend on Trees. Draw animals that depend on trees. Students partner up to tell about why the animals they drew need the trees. Then, share ideas as a group.

7. The Animals Whisper: Cause and Effect Learners write to tell what 4 animals said the effect of cutting the tree(s) would be.

8. A Text-to-Text Comparison Chart with Discussion Questions. This works well with another popular story by a famous author whose name I can't use

We watch a video (story...not movie) of this animated story and discuss the effects of cutting down the trees on the environment and the animals. The next day, we read The Great Kapok Tree and follow this plan.

I do this with kindergarten, but would be appropriate for K-2. Great with Earth Day Activities!!!
