What educators are saying

Used this to introduce the DBQ to my APUSH students and they LOVED the topic! So much fun and a great way to introduce a hard part of the course!
This resource helped chunk out the DBQ process and was so helpful in breaking down all the parts of the DBQ. Loved it and really helped my students!

Description

Unsure how to teach the DBQ? Everything in this writing workshop is ready to post or print for your students. No prep needed! This comprehensive and guided DBQ instruction can be completed digitally or on paper. The 3-part series will help students to learn about and master EACH rubric point for the AP Document Based Question. It also taps into student experience with coronavirus themed lessons and practice. UPDATED to reflect changes to the DBQ/LEQ Rubrics for 2023.

Works great for any AP History class: APUSH, AP Euro & AP World. Includes a scoring guide for both DBQs in the Teacher Instructions.

Our students' future children could write DBQs on this topic!

This fully editable Google Slides format will make it easy for you and for students to track their progress through Google Classroom by putting all writing instruction, practice, feedback & intervention in one place. Pear Deck versions added to provide instant feedback and examples.

WHAT’S INSIDE:

SCAFFOLDED WRITING SYSTEM:

  • 37 slide teacher PPT
  • 10 page digital (or printable) Student Handout
  • Pear Deck Options
  • 2 full-length AP-style DBQs
  • Peer Grading sheet

TEACHER INSTRUCTIONS:

  • This 3 part workshop is intended to work digitally or as a hard copy (printed)

→ you can assign an individual part of the Google Slides document by hitting CTRL + click on each slide. Then select “file” → “make a copy” → selected slides

    • I plan to assign this as ONE document to chart students’ progress & put all their DBQ instruction in one place

LESSON 1:

    • Assign the STUDENT HANDOUT to your students (“make a copy for each student” so it is fillable by the students)
    • You will need to assign the LESSON 1 & 2 DOCUMENTS → this can be done at the same time as the Student Handout or once you get to slide 14 [this can also be a second session]
    • The Teacher PPT can be presented in a Zoom session and/or posted for the students
    • Walk students through each slide and instruct them to take notes on their own handout.
    • Students should submit at the end of lesson 1 for feedback on their draft paragraph.

LESSON 2:

    • Lesson 2 will follow a similar format to Lesson 1. The more discussion you can generate as students work through the assignment, the better
    • Have students re-submit after Lesson 2 for feedback

LESSON 3:

    • Assign LESSON 3 document with a new prompt & documents
    • Students can write the DBQ for homework & then will exchange with a peer → this can be done by sharing with the individual student through Google Docs. This can be facilitated through a Zoom chat or a spreadsheet that students can edit & sign up for partners.
    • The peer edit rubric is at the end.
    • Students should submit after peer editing is complete
