Description

Great cultural end-of-year activity! Utilizing an engaging lesson and an option of two fun crafts, The Gondolas of Venice unit introduces your students to one of the most beautiful cities in the world – Venice, Italy. Students will learn that the streets of Venice are actually waterways called canals and that no cars are allowed in the city! Instead people travel by boat. A special boat called a gondola and a specially trained boat operator known as a gondolier are unique to the city. Learning about Italy and other places around the world will help create a curious minded global citizen, one that can appreciate how we are alike, how we are different, and how this knowledge makes us more tolerant and open-minded.

After learning about Venice, students will create their own gondola craft using templates included in this unit. Step-by-step, illustrated Instructions are included for two craft project options:

1. Reflections of Venice involves coloring, mirror imaging, cutting, and pasting. This project is appropriate for all ages, including PK – 2. Some PK students may need help cutting out shapes. This is a NO PREP project.

• Materials need for this project per student include the Venice Background Template copied onto white copy paper, the Gondola and Gondolier Template copied onto white copy paper, and a coffee stir stick.

2. The Hanging Gondolas of Venice involves cutting, folding, coloring, and tying a small knot. Younger students will need assistance with the construction of the gondola. PK students will also need help cutting out shapes.

• Materials need for this project per student include the Gondola Boat Template copied onto green and red standard letter size cardstock, the Gondolier Template copied onto light brown standard size cardstock, red ribbon, a coffee stir stick, 1 per student, and string.

Additional materials needed for these lessons include, glue sticks, scissors, crayons, colored pencils, markers and a hole punch.

TESTIMONIALS ABOUT OUR PRODUCTS

"In my nearly 30-year career in education, I have never seen children so engaged in their learning! International Travel Academy is truly a multi-disciplinary approach that enables children to explore the world in an unforgettable way. Students get a real sense of what it means to respect another country's heritage, beliefs and ways of living, thus making them more tolerant and internationally-minded. I highly recommend this program to educators and parents wishing to make learning come to life!"

– A Former Assistant Superintendent at Atlanta Public Schools

“(The five-day program) has given our school the unique opportunity to provide students with incredible experiences that align so well with our IB focus. Each spring with family and community support, our school essentially is transformed into our country of study for one full week. Teachers are easily able to follow the daily curriculum and activities provided, and the students truly enjoy this special week of instruction. From the art projects to festive food tastings, cultural dress, music, dance and traditions, the students spend this entire week engaged in new and exciting experiences of a new country. I would encourage all schools (IB, or not) to jump in and make a week like this happen for their students. It is incredibly gratifying to spend this week with kids as they come together to learn and share experiences like these across grade levels, school-wide. When we hear such rich discussion in classrooms and read their detailed writing about what they've learned as part of (the) week, it makes all the preparation, planning and expense totally worth it!! “
