Are you going to teach your students about John Williams? These 10 activities are the best supplemental resource to your planning! These activities engage students in the bio, listening activities, pen pal activities, KWL, story writing and more! A complete description of each of the ten activities are listed below:

KWL Activities

This activity is designed to help you assess what students know about this musician, don't know about this musician, and want to know about this musician. This is a great activity to start with so that it can inform you on your future planning, or which one of these activities may be best to start with for your students.

Pen Pal Activities.

Students write a standard letter to this composer and fold it into thirds. After students fold it into thirds, it becomes an envelope where students write an address, return address, and decorate a stamp. This is a wonderful activity that integrates life skills such as writing and mailing a letter, which in a creative way allows students to feel more connected than ever to this musician!

Bio Activities

Students have the opportunity to really get to know this musician by filling out a complete bio! Surrounding a cartoon of this musician are mini bio boxes that students must fill out. Students research to find out where the musician is from, how long he/she lived, main instrument and more.

Listening Log Activities (Elementary)

This listening log is designed for you the teacher to pick a song of your choice by this musician. As students listen to this piece, they fill out various questions and check various boxes. These prompts include their 1-5 star rating of the song, the dynamics, the tempo, instruments they heard, how it made them feel and more.

Listening Log Activities (Secondary)

This listening log is designed for you the teacher to pick a song of your choice by this musician. As students listen to this piece, they fill out various questions and check various boxes. These prompts include their 1-5 star rating of the song, the dynamics, the tempo, instruments they heard, how it made them feel and more.

Inspirational Drawing Activities

This listening log is designed for you the teacher to pick a song of your choice by this musician. As students listen to this piece, they draw a picture that describes what they hear. They also document the name of the song, the artist, colors they used and more.

Social Media Profile

Students are given a commonly formatted social media profile template. Students create a social media profile for this musician, along with three status updates of something this musician would say, or be thinking. They also fill out an "about me" section and an "interests" section of the musician.

Story Writing Activities

This listening log is designed for you the teacher to pick a song of your choice by this musician. As students listen to this piece, they write a story that they think the music tells. They are also free to write their own story that may not be what the musician intended.

Musician Rating

This listening log is designed for you the teacher to pick various songs of your choice by this musician. Students then will rate the musician, and list their favorite songs by the musician. Students will express what they like about this musician, along with one criticism they have about the musician and more.

Assessment Activities

This activity is to allow the student to show you all they've learned about this musician. This activity is best when done last out of the ten. This summative assessment allows the students to freely share all their knowledge. Historically in assessments if your student forgot when this musician was born, they would get the question on his/her birthday wrong. This assessment allows students to share all their knowledge without you cherry picking little dates and facts they may have forgotten. I have been surprised by all that students remember when utilizing this activity!
