Description
Journalism and its unique writing style can seem daunting for students accustomed to academic essays. News articles can prove especially challenging, as reporters must pack many facts into a few short sentences.
This fun and hilarious game gives students the chance to practice this challenging, yet necessary, skill. Students are given game cards, and each card holds a fictional piece of information. One card has the name and occupation of a person (WHO), one card has a serious or silly event (WHAT), one card has a location (WHERE), one card has a week, day, or time (WHEN), and one card is blank with lines for students to fill out with a supposed explanation for the event (WHY). When the teacher sets the timer, students must flip over their cards to discover their often humorous combinations of circumstances. Then they must figure out a “why” for the scenario and write the information in a basic lead. When the timer goes off, students are given points for each W they were able to include, and then the fun begins again! Because the combination of cards is different every time, this game can be played over and over for an effective yet entertaining review.
This resource includes the following:
- Game Instructions
- 8 Random Who Cards
- 8 Random What Cards
- 8 Random When Cards
- 8 Random Where Cards
- 8 Blank Why Cards (for students to fill in)
