What educators are saying

I used this with my students for a sub day. It was a great way to keep them engaged the entire period.

  1. In my keyboarding classes, once my students have learned the keys, I always have a "background" assignment for them to work on. These assignments are great for when they finish early or need a break from our current activities. Sometimes the kids work on these for several weeks at spare, odd moments

Description

As a keyboarding teacher, I sometimes feel like I teach a skill, but not content. In fact, I find that this keyboarding skill can be a GREAT way to re-iterate the content of other teachers! There's no better place to do cross-curriculum connections than in keyboarding!

This lesson was written for both Keyboarding teachers AND social studies teachers who cover U.S. Geography. I was horrified when my own daughter, who was in 5th grade during the Pandemic, never actually learned her states or capitals. And this made me realize that perhaps there are MANY students who may have missed it or struggle with it. This was why I chose U.S. Geography as my first cross-curricular activity.

This self-grading assignment can be done in Excel or Google Sheets, and is perfect for chromebooks, virtual learning, substitute lessons, or just a break from the traditional worksheet. Included is a self-grading score sheet, and eight different activities. There is also a typing and non-typing version, so if you are a geography teacher but worry about the typing aspect, you can use the pull-down menu version instead either for all your classes, or your struggling students.

Activity 1 - STATES BY REGION - focuses on the different regions of the U.S., as students label each of the 50 states in one of eight different regions, the colorful map will edit and change to show where the state is.

Activity 2 - US CAPITALS - In this simple sheet, every state is listed and students type in the name of the capital for that state. A list of all capitals is provided to choose from, and will automatically change color when they have chosen it.

Activity 3 - STATES BY SHAPE - In this activity, silhouette images of each state are shown, and students choose which state it is. It will be checked of the list as they go, so as they type the states they DO know, the list of possibilities for those they don't will grow smaller and smaller.

Activity 4 - STATE NICKNAMES - Students enter which state matches with which state nickname, choosing from a multiple choice list of 4 options.

Activity 5 - RIVERS - This activity comes complete with a map of the United States and 24 of the most well-known rivers. Students identify the rivers from the map, and if they don't know the answer, they can opt for a "hint" that will help them out!

Activity 6 - LAKES - Students look at 30 facts about the 10 biggest lakes in the United States, determining which fact goes with which state. They can then move the images of the lakes to where it belongs on the map!

Activity 7 - FUN FACTS - In this activity, students are asked 33 questions about U.S. deserts, mountain ranges, climates, bodies of water and states. Possible answer are given and checked off as they are used. Students then enter the answers into a provided cross-word puzzle.

Activity 8 - CLIMATE - This is the only activity that is connected to another, and cannot be completed unless Activity 7 is done. After completing activity 7, they will get a list of numbers 1-11 in the proper order, which, if entered on this page, will color the 11 different climates on a United States Map. It only takes a minute to complete, but it's fun to watch!
