What educators are saying

I enjoyed this project more than the students, but it was engaging and touched the bases of all the areas I covered with notes. Great resource.
We had a lot of fun with this project and my students were really engaged. I liked the format, although I used folded construction paper instead of file folders. They turned out really great. I wish there were more projects like this!

Description

A independent research project all about ecosystems!

Great for middle school. It also works well with upper elementary (fourth and fifth graders) but a little more guidance may be necessary.

This project requires students to research. I allow mine to use their own device or any internet enabled technology in my classroom. This project can also be completed in the library using hard copy resources or in a computer lab.

Complete student instructions have been included. Each step is clearly laid out in the order they should be completed.

Students must first complete twelve vocabulary blocks. This helps them become familiar with the terms they will come across during the project. I have them write the definition in their own words and draw an illustration.

The vocabulary terms are: ecosystem, habitat, biotic factor, abiotic factor, population, community, population density, limiting factor, food chain, food web, predator, prey.

The student will then choose an organism to research. They will illustrate the organism, population, community and ecosystem. They will also list the biotic and abiotic factors in its ecosystem.

The student will differentiate between autotrophs and heterotrophs, producers, consumers and decomposers, and herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.

Finally, the student will explore food chains and food webs, creating one of each for their chosen organism.

Once completed, the student can glue/tape their completed work to a file folder. It makes for a nice, neat presentation.

Pictures of a completed project are provided.
