How to use this Lincoln-Douglas Debate Format Outline:

This debate outline features the Lincoln-Douglas Format and includes a slideshow lesson, teacher handouts, scripts, and rubrics to facilitate a classroom debate! Also included are student handouts and graphic organizers to guide students through the debate process.

The Lincoln-Douglas Format is an easy-to-follow style of debate that demonstrates competing values. This format is widely used in competitive debate tournaments, including those held by the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) and the National Educational Debate Association. This debate format is known to be an analytical and democratic approach to complex societal issues.

You can begin this debate unit by viewing the Lincoln-Douglas Debate Format Slideshow Lesson or reading the Debate Format Informational Handout with your students. These materials provide an overview of the debate format to prepare students to participate in their own debate.

Then, select or introduce the topic(s) (known as the “resolution”) for debate and divide your class into their groups. Each group will need an affirmative and negative group.

You can then distribute the Debate Graphic Organizer for students to complete. I always encourage every student to fill out this outline, even if they are working in groups. Remind students to consider who will read each section during the debate.

A Differentiated Debate Graphic Organizer has also been provided to support your unique classroom needs.

You can lead the debate using the Teacher Moderator Script and Instructions provided. This outline requires minimal prep on behalf of the moderator - simply fill out the script with details as they pertain to your topic(s), and arrange the classroom layout accordingly! I find it easiest to assign a student with the role of time-keeper so that I may assess the debate while it is taking place.

An editable 4-Level Debate Rubric has been included with this debate outline. To modify this rubric, simply make a copy of the editable rubric to your Google Drive®.

⭒ For classrooms utilizing Google Classroom® ⭒

To access the digital version of these materials, simply follow the instructions within the resource to copy the files directly to your Google Drive®.

We had a lot of fun debating different topics and found this approach to be very balanced. The moderator script was a nice touch. I used your suggestion to let students dress in formal attire and it definitely set the tone!
