What educators are saying

This was an amazing and engaging way to launch our work with line plots! The students were completely engaged, and the activity includes a range of questions that really helped the class analyze what was being asked of them. I will definitely use this for years to come! Thank you!
My students loved this! We platoon for math and I have the kids who struggle. This was such a great way for the kids to understand line plots, which can be very challenging for some.

Description

This math activity will engage the entire class and give students a hands-on activity to manipulate the pieces to see a larger version of a line plot. This set of task cards is designed to be used as a whole class life-size model, but could be used in small groups, partners, or even individually.

There are 64 task cards with measurements to plot. You decide which amount you want to use based on your students.

This activity could take one math period or last over a couple of days.

This activity could be done a few ways and also used more than once by varying the task cards:

SCAFFOLDING: Start with a set number of cards and add more each time the activity is completed. This will change the data/results each time it is completed, making it “new” each time.

DIFFERENTIATION: For example, to make it less difficult, students could use 5-10 cards, average difficulty 11-16 cards, highest difficulty 17+ cards. The number lines (denominators) could also be used to differentiate instruction. Some cards are in 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8.

This resource includes:

  • 32 TASK CARDS-up to one whole
  • 32 TASK CARDS-mixed numbers
  • NUMBER LINE CUT OUTS
  • LINE PLOT TEMPLATE
  • 12 SAMPLE QUESTIONS FOR EACH SET OF TASK CARDS
  • DISPLAY QUESTION CARDS
  • EXIT SLIP TEMPLATE
  • PHOTOS & TEACHER TIPS

***Just added 32 task cards for mixed numbers.

Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots. For example, from a line plot find and interpret the difference in length between the longest and shortest specimens in an insect collection.
Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots. For example, given different measurements of liquid in identical beakers, find the amount of liquid each beaker would contain if the total amount in all the beakers were redistributed equally.
