Description

This literary analysis graphic organizer paragraph outline will help your students build strong paragraph writing skills, and students will get quality paragraph writing practice throughout the semester. This paragraph writing template is designed for both middle and high school students. This is a great paragraph writing template to use for paragraph of the week activities since it helps students build quality writing habits that focus on targeted writing skills.

BEST PRACTICES….

I love using this paragraph writing template with our class novels as well as with independent reading novels. I assign my 10th graders this literary analysis graphic organizer every 2-3 weeks. Repeating this process routinely is a strategic method that allows you to monitor student growth over the semester. The repetition allows me to teach & reteach specific writing skills. For example, for one week, we focus on making specific claims, and for the next week, we then focus on choosing relevant evidence and the skill of embedding. This is a great tool to use to teach paragraph editing as well. With this paragraph writing template, students will leave your classroom knowing the components of a literary analysis paragraph. If you plan to use this resource with your middle school students, this is a strategic way to get them well-prepared for high school English classrooms. Plus, this is my go-to EMERGENCY SUB PLAN! Just assign this literary analysis graphic organizer anytime you need to be out of the classroom. Students get the paragraph writing practice that they need and you save time on sub-planning. Students take about 40 minutes to one hour to complete this paragraph writing template. Students can craft a literary analysis paragraph any time that they have a novel assigned to them.

FEATURES...

This paragraph graphic organizer includes sentence starters for each section of a literary analysis paragraph so that students are supported each step of the way. There is also a written sample literary analysis paragraph included for Sandra Cisneros's novel, The House on Mango Street. This sample paragraph is meant to support students so that they have a clear example to use as a reference for writing literary analysis paragraphs.

The main skills practiced include the following:

  • Making a strong claim in their topic sentence
  • Embedding quotes that support their claim
  • Proving their claim through thorough analysis
  • Seamlessly concluding their paragraph

Pair this resource with this literary analysis rubric.
