MLA Format Test with Answer Key (and Explanations)

This test covers MLA Formatting for:

1. Setting Up a Basic Document

2. Parenthetical/ In-Text Citations

3. Integrating Quotes

4. Paraphrasing Effectively

5. Works Cited Citations

The test is multiple choice, but it is challenging because it asks students to apply what they have learned. Included with the test is a one-page answer sheet that is ready to print and hand out to students. This will save you a lot of time and paper because you only have to copy the test itself to have enough tests for one class set. You can reproduce the answer sheets quickly and easily, and having the answers on one page makes the test easier to grade. Also included with the test and answer sheet is an answer key, followed by thorough explanations of the correct and incorrect answers.

This test is the culminating assessment of my MLA unit, which is taught in three parts: (1) Setting Up the Basic Document, (2) Parenthetical Citations, Quoting, and Paraphrasing, and (3) the Works Cited Page. I teach MLA Format in three parts because students have a lot of difficulty learning academic formatting, and I have found over years of teaching it in segments that students do well when the material is broken up.
