Learning Objective

Students will match three supporting details to each main idea statement about Thanksgiving.

Description

This engaging Thanksgiving-themed main idea activity will be a hit in your upper elementary classroom! Students will practice identifying the main idea sentence and its supporting detail sentences! Students match 4 supporting detail sentences (written on feathers) to each main idea sentence (written on the body of a turkey). This also makes a creative November bulletin board or school hallway display!

To begin, each student is given four worksheets that contain 4 turkey images and 16 feather images. All of the sentences printed on the worksheets are related to Thanksgiving or turkeys.

Procedure:

  1. Students read the main idea sentence on each Tom Turkey. (The turkeys are labeled 1, 2, 3, and 4.)
  2. Students read a supporting detail sentence written on a feather. They determine which main idea sentence it supports, and write the appropriate number on their feather.
  3. Students color and cut out the turkey bodies and feathers.
  4. Once all of the turkeys and feathers have been sorted into their respective groups, students glue them onto a sheet of construction paper.

Student-friendly directions are included so that you can place the directions under your document camera, and students can refer to them as they complete the project. (An answer key is also included.)

TPT DIGITAL EASEL VERSION- This is a paperless version that can be completed on a device. Each slide contains one turkey and four feathers. A main idea statement is displayed on the turkey's body. Each feather contains a detail statement, but only one of the detail feathers matches the main idea statement. Students must determine which detail matches the main idea statement on the slide, and then move the feather image onto the turkey.
