Description
For these main idea worksheets, equip your students with highlighters to help them find the supporting details that support the main idea. Students will read multiple paragraphs and find the main idea of each one, as well as the entire passage.
Encourage them to use the graphic organizers included to help them organize the stories.

***Common Core Standards***
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.2.2 Identify the main topic of a multiparagraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.2.7 Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.2 Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.1.2 Identify the main topic and retell key details of a text.
Students will read a passage consisting of 3 paragraphs, and should highlight or underline any supporting details.
There are 9 different stories and there are two worksheets for each story. One is multiple choice and the other is free response.
I gave my students the multiple choice worksheets first and then after they were confident about finding the main idea themselves, I gave them the free response sheets. They read the passage on their own and wrote down what they thought the main idea was.
Includes graphic organizers for the main idea of the entire passages as well as an organizer for the main idea and details of each individual paragraph.
