What educators are saying

This was challenging for some of my lower students, but it was great for them to try and get the answers! It was a fun booklet for the kids to make!
My students really loved this resource, and it really helped cement the idea of main idea vs. detail. Great resource; I highly recommend!

Description

Here is a hands-on, creative way to practice identifying main idea and detail sentences! Your students will match three supporting details to each of the five main idea sentences. This activity is ideal for Earth Day because of its Earth-friendly content, but it can be used at any time throughout the school year.

All of the main idea sentences are related to the Earth:

  1. Earth has a very specific place in the solar system.
  2. The Earth formed billions of years ago.
  3. The Earth has four layers.
  4. Sometimes natural disasters occur on Earth.
  5. There are many ways that we can protect Earth and its resources for a better future.

Each main idea sentence has three supporting details that the students must find and rewrite on the appropriate panel.

After students have transferred all of the detail sentences to the panels, they begin assembling their foldable booklet.

This resource includes student-friendly directions that can be projected for students to refer to throughout the worktime! An answer key is also included.

Here's what teachers like you had to say about using this activity with their students:

⭐️ Janice B. said, "My students really loved this resource, and it really helped cement the idea of main idea vs. detail. Great resource; I highly recommend!"

⭐️ Taylor G. said, "Loved the approach of finding which details match a main idea, rather than finding a main idea given details. The information was interesting and the activity was engaging."

⭐️ Christie B. said, "This was a perfect activity to review main idea and details. The kids found it fun and I was encouraged it was just more than paper and pencil. They ended up with a fun booklet in the end. Well worth the purchase to me!"

⭐️ Kadie R. said, "This resource completely aligned to the curriculum, and was a great Science tie-in. The students didn't even know this was a Language Arts lesson! All of the details went great with the main idea and it helped reinforce the relationship between main idea and details. A great summative that is "project based" instead of a traditional test."
