Description

This unit has everything you need for a great unit to teach map skills, vocabulary, continents, and landforms. This unit was written and used with first, second and third graders.

What is included….

MAP SKILLS

-A 12 page no prep packet to help your students understand basic map skills. A cover is included so all you need to do is copy and staple. This pack would be great for distance learning, easy enough so students can do this independently.

This pack includes these concepts…

-What is a globe?

-What is a map?

-Where are the continents and oceans?

-Where are we in the world?

-We need directions.

-Using directions.

-What is a map key?

-Using a map key.

-What is a map grid?

Practice your map skills

(students create their own map)

VOCABULARY

-24 vocabulary cards that include the word, definition and picture. These cards are great to display in a pocket chart and to refer to while teaching.

Vocabulary included are; globe, geography, symbol, map, compass rose, map key, Earth, continent, country, hemisphere, equator, directions, landform, political map, ocean, latitude, longitude, border, location, grid, capital, cartographer, physical map and state.

-A vocabulary illustrated dictionary cover and sheet are included so your students can make a class illustrated dictionary. Create this dictionary by giving each student a vocabulary word and then they illustrate the word, write the definition and write a sentence using that word.

-Vocabulary comprehension page to use for assessment or review.

CONTINENTS

-A page on each continent that includes facts and information.

-Seven continent mini booklet where students write facts about each continent.

-Directions and pages included to make a globe out of paper-mache. A great fun hands on learning activity.

LANDFORMS

-11 full and half page pictures of land and water forms (real pictures). These land and water forms included-mountains, lake, river, ocean, valley, island, plateau, hill, plain, desert and volcano. These pictures come with the definition and make a great display in a classroom.

--Landform matching cards, match the definition to the landform. This can also be used to play concentration or memory game.

CENTER ACTIVITIES

-A Map skills center activity. Students answer questions on map skills then they write their answer down on the sheet of paper that is included. This activity is great to check students comprehension of map skills.

-Geo-Bingo (4 cards included) This bingo activity is great for review and can be played in small groups.
