March Madness Book Tournament
What educators are saying
Description
Updated 2023 to include digital (Google-based) components
This a month-long ELA tournament in that focuses on books and WRITING! Students NEED to be writing about what they read and developing a sense of passion for great books. I have found that this tournament gets the students excited about reading and writing, and it teaches them how to handle competition. *Please note, this product could easily be adapted so it is NOT a tournament where students compete against each other.
THE HOW-TO (Download the preview for a more in-depth look)
*Students will select a book that they think is PHENOMENAL and deserves to win this tournament. My kids will usually pick a novel they read this year or last year. Before the tournament, students will reread their novel so they are able to successfully complete each challenge.
*The tournament will begin and their first task is to create a Book Cover Recommendation.
*Second task= Book report
*Third task= Interview the main character
*Fourth task= Write (and act) out a scene
*Fifth task= Video book trailer (I have used FlipGrid, WeVideo, and MovieMaker for this in the past. Free trials are a teacher's best friend!)
As the students complete each task, they will have to follow the instruction pages. Students will be advanced to the next round based on the points received on the rubric grading pages.
ALL STUDENTS WILL COMPLETE EVERY SINGLE TASK IN THIS TOURNAMENT. I USE THESE FOR ELA GRADES.
IN THIS PRODUCT YOU WILL FIND:
*A detailed description of how I use this product.
*Multiple versions of the overview page that outlines activities and due dates (due dates to be filled in by you).
*Detailed student planning pages that assist them through EACH of the five main activities: Book recommendation, book report, interview of the main character, act out a scene, and video book trailer.
*Peer evaluator rubrics for students to score one another in each activity. This is totally optional.
*Teacher rubrics for each activity.
*Bulletin board letters and basketball hoop clipart.
*Editable PowerPoint
(Everything is available in print and digital (Google-based) options.
**If you do not have access to technology that will allow your students to create a book trailer, you can edit the document with an activity of your choice that will still allow you to complete this tournament in your classroom.
