    Description

This packet of ELA worksheets consists of sentences and passages focused on the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. Skills included in this resource include main idea, context clues, and author's purpose.

4 pages (4 passages) focus on MAIN IDEA

-For each passage, they will answer two multiple-choice questions.

    1. "Which of the following sentences best states the main idea

    of the passage?"

    2. "Which would be the best title for this passage?"

I have found that my students struggle with this type of question on multiple-choice tests because in some ways it is somewhat subjective what the best title would be. Therefore, I included a DETAILED ANSWER KEY that explains why a certain answer is the best title for the passage.

3 pages focus on AUTHOR'S PURPOSE

Students read four passages and determine whether the author's purpose is to persuade, inform, entertain, or explain.

2 pages focus on CONTEXT CLUES

Students read paragraphs and use context clues to choose the correct meaning of a given word (nine multiple-choice items).

********These resources are available in two formats:

    1. Traditional Printables- Print the PDF and distribute the pencil-and-paper worksheet.
    2. Easel Activities- With this paperless format, an interactive layer has been added to each original PDF! Students can complete this activity on a device. Students read each sentence or paragraph and answer each question that follows. The main idea and context clues worksheets contain a multiple-choice format, where students move the circles to select their answers. The author's purpose worksheet contains a short-answer format, where students type a complete sentence in the answer box that explains the author's primary purpose for writing the passage.
