This packet is based on the book Martin's Big Words written by Doreen Rappaport & Illustrated by Bryan Collier. It includes a reader's theater script, posters of the quotes from the book, and times cards to match up dates and facts about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life.

Reader’s Theater Script:
The text from the book (plus a few additional lines) has been split into speaking parts for four groups in honor of Dr. King’s four children. The next page has a place for you to write down the names of the group members. The top of the script also has a place for the students to write their name and the group you assigned them.
Two options for reading/performing the script:
1. Have the entire group speak their lines at the same time.
2. Give lines to individual students from each group. I provided a blank space next to the group names in the script so you can write down the name of the student who will speak each line if you choose this option. Make copies of the script and have the students highlight their lines.
Using the Script with the Quote Posters:
In the script, every bolded line is part of Martin’s “big words”. In the script, I have assigned the entire class to read these lines by writing the word “ALL” above that line. I also included the directions to hold up the poster featuring that quote. The quotes are in order of the book/script.
Timeline Cards:
As a follow-up activity, take the 23 blue date cards and 23 gray fact cards in this packet, mix them up, and give them to the students. Instruct them to line up the blue cards in chronological order. Then have them do some research to match up the fact card with the correct date. There is an answer key in this packet. This timeline is found in the back of the book, Martin’s Big Words.
