What educators are saying

Used this at the end of the first semester so students would stop asking "why do I need to know how to do math, when will I ever use it!". Very interesting!
This is so awesome! I love getting my students thinking about how they will use math in their future careers!

Description

This math career research project and presentation is perfect to engage and excited your students about using math in the real-world! It is a great opportunity to get students thinking about using math outside of the classroom, all while practicing their research and presentation skills!

Students are provided with 20 career options to choose from, and must complete guided research questions about their profession of choice. Each of these twenty professions includes 3 links to appropriate sites to find their information, making the project attainable for even beginner researchers. Additionally, suggested search terms are listed for all topics in order to assist students who may have difficult getting started. Questions pertain to necessary education, approximate salary, daily life, and the ways in which math is used in the profession.

Upon completing the required questions, students are given a template for a Google Slides presentation, with a separate slide for different topics. Students may customize these and make them their own, and you might enjoy having your class share their research with one another! I have included a sample presentation for you to model.

When students near the end of the project, there is a summary page for students to write a brief paragraph about what they have learned, as well as a rubric for you to grade their research, slideshow, and presentation. Everything you need is ready to go!

This project is great at any time of the year, but particularly in the spring or end of the year, after testing, or during a cross-curricular week at school.
