What educators are saying

My students loved doing this activity to apply their learning. It was more hands on than completing a workbook page.
I used this as an activity students can work on if they finished their class work. Students were eager to finish their work so they could work on this. Thank you!

Description

Practice simplifying expressions with fractions and decimals with this engaging activity.

Students work in groups of 4. Each group member gets a different sheet of expressions. They color the spaces according to the solutions. Once all 4 pieces are complete and assembled, a picture of a shark is revealed.

Students will know if answers are wrong if the picture looks wrong.

This is a great way to engage students and motivate them to do math!

Problems involve adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, parenthesis, fractions, and decimals. (Negatives and exponents are not included in this resource.) Click the preview to see the problems.

Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols.
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction.
