Description

OVERVIEW:

A real life, differentiated math and ELA project that asks 4th graders to plan and budget a day at the Bronx Zoo. This project was made to be a companion for the picture book, Cubs in the Tub: The True Story of the Bronx Zoo's First Woman Zookeeper, but it can also be done as a stand-alone project at anytime.

Want a Closer Look? Download the preview to see exactly what is included and what each tasks asks students to do. This resources is very little prep (just making one packet per student) but is highly engaging for students.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

Bronx Zoo Fact Sheet: A Bronx Zoo fact sheet is included that provides students with some background information about the zoo.

The Tasks: Four real world tasks are included in this resource.

  • Task #1: Buying Tickets - Students will determine how much admission tickets and parking will cost based on the number of people in their immediate family.

  • Task #2: Planning Meals - Students will determine the cost of their immediate family having lunch at the zoo based on the menu/pricing of the park’s main restaurant.

  • Task #3: A Wild Encounter - Students will choose which Wild Encounter their family will get to experience and write a paragraph explaining to their parents why they chose that encounter.

  • Task #4: Exhibits to Visit - Students will use a map of the Bronx Zoo to pick eight exhibits that their family will see during their visit.

Budget Sheet: As students are completing each task, they will keep track of all their costs on the budgeting sheet. Once they have completed all four tasks, their fifth and final task will be to find the grand total for the entire day spent at the zoo.

NO Answer Key: There is NO answer included for this resource because this project is differentiated based on student choices.

Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.
Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
